Storm Dunlop
Author
Here is a list of books of which I am
the author or co-author, together with a note of some contributions to
multi-author works such as dictionaries and encyclopedias. As will be seen, most
of my writing has been for for adults - albeit at various levels - but some
work has been for children. Between them, these books have been translated into
at least 22 languages. A few recent books are described in greater detail here.
My most successful title is probably Astronomy: A Step-by-Step Guide to the Night
Sky, with total sales of about 250,000 in the various editions. This still
generates a constant trickle of enquiries. I tried for years to persuade the
publishers – and the successor companies - to reprint the English-language
edition. At long last - after 18 years! - a completely revised edition
appeared, being published as Practical
Astronomy in 2003 by George Philip & Sons (see below).
Regrettably, not all publishers are good
at informing authors of foreign-language editions - co-publishers are also
notoriously bad at forwarding copies - and I have discovered two such editions
purely by chance in foreign bookshops, and one by browsing the UNESCO list of
translations. At least one other Spanish edition of one book is known to have
been printed. All the copies - thousands of them - were awaiting distribution
at the time of the death of the head of the family-owned publishing company,
but subsequently disappeared. So if anyone finds a copy of the Spanish edition
of Amateur Astronomy, I should be
very interested to receive full details. Please email me on:
storm322[AT]btinternet.com. Some ‘missing’ editions are noted under individual
titles.
Authors know that books have a life of
their own. If you need proof, take a look at what happens in this YouTube video
of when a bookshop closes for the night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKVcQnyEIT8.
This
book has now been nominated for the Louis J. Battan Author’s Award K-12 of the
American Meteorological Society.
